Match Racers ready to battle like gladiators in Sweden

Twelve teams are getting ready to rumble at Stena Match Cup Sweden, which attracts over 100,000 spectators to the picturesque island of Marstrand. It’s a midsummer’s vacation paradise for the Swedish spectators, and a natural amphitheatre for some brutal match racing battles on this, the Alpari Match Racing World Tour.

Last year Bjorn Hansen responded to the roar of the home crowd and won Stena Match Cup Sweden by beating Peter Gilmour 3-0 in the final. No one knows these waters or the DS37 keelboats better than home boy Hansen, who is one of three sailors - along with Russell Coutts and Dean Barker - to have conquered Marstrand twice in his career. Peter Gilmour is the only one to have won more with a magnificent seven victories between 1994 and 2009. Could this be Hansen's year for the hat-trick? It would certainly delight the home crowd cheering from the island’s rocky shore.

Then again, Hansen and his eWork Sailing Team were hotly tipped to win the Korea Match Cup a month ago, and the Swedes couldn’t get past Qualifying into the final eight. It was a disastrous exit for one of the most respected teams on the Tour, and it highlights the strength throughout this group of elite sailors. “We know that we need to perform at our best to be able to get a good result. With our poor start to the Tour this year it is now important to get some points on the scoreboard. But still, we do not feel any pressure and will make sure that we enjoy the week in Marstrand and just have fun out there. This is our favourite event with thousands of fans on the cliffs, if the weather permits. With the steep cliffs on both sides of the narrow bay it’s like sailing in a football arena where you can hear the people cheering. The crowd loves match racing and understands the game like nowhere else in the world.”

Fellow Swede, Johnie Berntsson and his Stena Sailing Team, are also looking for home crowd support. “This is our home event, all our friends are here and our home club, Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club,  is organising the regatta. We have high expectations and we have spent time preparing more than ever before.”

Mathieu Richard and his GEFCO Match Racing Team showed what can be achieved with a wild card entry in Korea, overcoming reigning Tour champion Ian Williams and GAC Pindar in the semi-final and Taylor Canfield's USone in the final. Richard earns another wild card entry at Marstrand, one of his favourite battlegrounds. “This is one of the best match racing venues in the world, racing so close to the shore with so many people watching. We love it!” The other wild card goes to 25-year-old Simone Ferrarese from Italy, who has already opened his 2013 season with a stunning victory at the Congressional Cup in the USA, where he beat Williams in the semi-finals and another ISAF Match Racing World Champion and America’s Cup winning helmsman Ed Baird.

Taylor Canfield and the USone team have yet to experience the Marstrand arena. “I am excited to be in Sweden for the first time,” said Canfield. “It will be nice to get back on the tiller in the DS37 rather than the wheel at the last two events.”

Executive Director of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour, James Pleasance, said: “With in excess of 100,000 spectators, Stena Match Cup Sweden gives the sailors a unique experience. Hearing the roar of the crowd in such a spectacular setting, it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. There’s a prize fund of USD140,000 to be fought over, not that these sailors need much extra motivation. Stena Match Cup Sweden is one of the highlights of the Tour and we’re going to see some fierce but friendly competition.”

Qualifying begins on Monday, with the knock-out stages due to commence on Thursday.

2013 Storm Trysail Block Island Race Week Wednesday

Out of 19 classes, 16 (four IRC, five PHRF and seven One-Design) fit in three races today, while the remaining three (Cruising Spinnaker, Cruising Non-Spinnaker, and Double Handed) sailed their scheduled single navigator-style race. On four different race courses, the wind was light but for the most part cooperative and the sun neither hid nor scorched while several fortunate leaders from yesterday extended their leads and others brought their game on to find a new place at the top of the scoreboard.

The Second Sol Qualifying Races finished on Saturday, June 22. Twenty teams signed up to compete in the regatta, and each contributed $L5,000 to Sail4Life and the American Cancer Society as an Entry Donation.SEC SOL ROUND ONE 749x1024 In return, each team received a free copy of the Patchogue II raceboat, generously provided by Jacqueline Trudeau.
The fleet of twenty contestants was broken into five ‘timeslot groups’  that raced against each other. The five winners then earned the right to compete in an upcoming Finals \Regatta that will be held in North Sea.
The timeslot qualifying rounds consisted of eight race heats for each group of four boats. The results were scored using the Standard Low Point System, using four discards. In other words, only a team’s best four races counted.
SECOND SOL - QUAL ROUND TWOThere are several advantages to using such a large number of discards in a SL sailboat race. Those benefits were clear in past multi-race events, including the J-Classic andONE World competitions. On the other hand, four discards increased the risk of a potential tie between boats competing in any particular Second Sol timeslot group. Actually, as the races played out this past week, that never happened. In each group there turned out to be one team that clearly distingushed itself as the ‘best of the best‘ in a very skilled peer group.
Here are the scores for each team identified by contact person and sail number. Please remember that this was a boat race, not a skipper race. The person named below as the “Helm Name” was the contact person responsible for the team, but that person did not necessarily skipper the boat in every (or perhaps any) race. That’s a good thing; in most cases the race team members took turns at the tiller in different races; it was a cooperative venture. :-)
Sec Sol Quals June 22
If you take a few minutes and look at the table above, you will see that in each timeslot group there was one team that amassed a “perfect score” of 4.0, meaning that they sailed at least four First Place races. You can’t do better than 4.0 in this Regatta, but in all five groups there was one team that slam-dunked the races so skillfully they ended up with a perfect score.
That perfect quintet are:
02- Diamond Marchant- NYC1
05- Ariel Gallais- Moontear’s Lovecats
09- Ronin Zane- Grumpy Old Men Yacht Club
04- SerenityAeon Resident- Blue Marlins
15- Alain Gloster- Eureka
These five will now advance to the Finals Round, where a series of four fleet races will determine the overall champion for this year’s Second Solcompetition.

Here are the charts for Round Two. Please be sure to check the Discussion Thread for chart updates over the next few days.

Second Sol FINALS Race

At the end of Round Two, we’ll tally up the point scores and determine the winners of each of the timeslot groups. Those five teams will then compete in a Finals Regatta hosted by North Sea that will decide the Second Sol Champions. :-)
The Finals event was originally scheduled for June 23. However, several sailors pointed out that date was too inflexible. There would be no practice time, and sailors on the Final Five teams might well have RL obligations that day.
I’ve therefore agreed to postpone the Finals. Once we have the Five Finalist teams late on Saturday, we’ll work to pick a new date and time over the subsequent two weeks that is acceptable to all the competing boats. It’s their race, after all; we can’t sail a Finals unless all the boats make it to the Startline, full of hot air and ready to roar:-)
